BMW has unveiled the much- speculated-about 2019 R 1250 GS and the big news is the advances in the boxer engine. The latest iterationof the famous family line features a new,84cc larger engine that produces a claimedadditional 11 horsepower (taking it to 136hp)and another 13ft/lbs of torque at 7750rpm.Another highlight of the new engine is thevariable valve timing, or BMW ShiftCamTechnology, which BMW says “enablesvariation of the valve timings and valvestroke on the intake side. In addition, the intake camshafts are designed forasynchronous opening of the two intakevalves, resulting in enhanced swirl of thefresh, incoming mixture and thereforemore efective combustion. Other technicalchanges to the engine relate to the camshaftdrive — now taken care of by a toothed chain(previously a roller chain) — an optimised oilsupply, twin-jet injection valves and a newexhaust system.”The engine also now features two knocksensors to accommodate fuels less than RON95, which is smart thinking given fuel qualityis far from assured on the road. The new R 1250 GS now has the equipmentfeature Connectivity as standard, includinga 6.5-inch full-colour TFT screen. Thismeans you can connect to your BMW via aBluetooth helmet comms device and makecalls or listen to Fleetwood Mac. It canalso be used in conjunction with the BMWnavigation app which throws from yourphone to the TFT screen.
